Hi there. It’s another week and we magnify the Goodness of God. Today, I want us to ponder over an important subject; “If you make a promise to God, don’t hesitate to honour it”.
Let’s look at this scripture.
“When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools, pay your vow”. (Ecclesiastes 5:4)
In the Israelite culture, making vow was a serious matter. Vows were voluntary, but once made, they were unbreakable. Read Deuteronomy 23:21-23.
Sometimes it is better not to open your mouth at all to make a promise to God and break it. Many a time we open our mouth in haste to say, O God, if only you would help me pass my exams, I would give an offering of a hundred Ghana Cedis or if you heal me of my distressing disease, I would sow a seed of five hundred cedis. Sadly, most people would give less of what they had promised.
I heard on air a true story about a man who prayed and promised God, if only his pregnant nanny goat would give birth to two billy goats, he would give one to the Lord as an offering. Amazingly, the nanny goat gave birth to two billy goats and the owner was thankful. Unfortunately, within few weeks one was hit hard by a car killing it instantly. The squealing brakes prompted the owner’s son to rush outside as the nanny goat was bleating. However, the driver sped off before he arrived. He knelt by it as blood was oozing through the nostrils and the corner of it mouth. The son picked it and scurried home. He laid the dead billy goat on the ground and rushed inside to call his father. His father screamed the moment he set eyes on the lifeless billy goat, his face took on a morose expression. As both stood beside the dead billy goat, staring in awe, his son gathered courage and asked his father a question that was nagging him.
“Father, you promised to give one billy goat to God as an offering, what are you going to do as one is dead?” He asked in a flat voice.
After a pause, his father replied.
“Uhm, actually the one I decided to give to God is what has been struck down by the car”, he said faintly.
His son lifted his eyes, a slight frown creasing his brow, met his father’s sulky gaze. He shook his head and turned. He trudged into the room and closed the door gently.
As his father took a glance at the dead billy goat, he lifted it, put it in a sack and threw it in the thrash.
Often times we don’t treat God fairly at all. We spend lavishly on ourselves but when it comes to God we hesitate to honour Him. His will for us is to prosper in all areas of our lives. However, a vow is a promise to God and it must be respected. Whether it is to God or anybody else we must honour it. We all fall short of honouring our vows to God. Let’s repent and ask God for forgiveness. God’s word also tells us how we can be prosperous in giving. May we do our best to fulfill any vow we make to God to attract His blessings.
